In-Home Getaways: Creating Spaces That Encourage Calm and Relaxation

Your home is more than a place to cook, eat, and sleep. It’s an environment that reflects who you are and provides a space where you can seek solace from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. At the end of the day, it should encourage calm and relaxation.

To create these spaces, it’s important to remember that every room, no matter how busy or quiet, deserves to feel like a getaway within your home. Whether you’re designing a dining room for entertainment, a spa-like bathroom for R&R, or a dreamy and luxurious bedroom, they all can benefit from certain design elements to encourage a Zen vibe, and today we’ve rounded up some of our favorites to get your inspiration wheels turning.

Partitions & Visual Separations

Today’s designs often prioritize open floor plans, but even with an open-concept space, partitions and visual separations are key to creating pockets of intimacy and quiet. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean a solid door or a completely sound-proof private space. On the contrary, partitions are just as effective when they create only visual depth and interest. Wrought iron gates that open onto a formal dining room, for instance, help to add a touch of vintage class and give the dining area a feeling of warmth and seclusion. Similarly, a built-in partition within a bedroom can simultaneously act as a spacious headboard and provide a subtle enclosure, separating the bed from the bathroom or blocking out too-bright morning light. Separations are essential to health and well-being, without a doubt.

Luxurious Spa Amenities

There’s nothing more luxurious than a day at the spa, wouldn’t you say? Then again, if you prioritize spa-like spaces in your home, there’s no reason you can’t have the same level of relaxation any day of the week. It’s no secret, then, that one of our favorite ways to create an in-home getaway is to prioritize your home’s bathroom. Think about the materials you’re drawn to the most – perhaps it’s bookmatched marble and vintage lighting, or maybe its spacious vanity counters and plush towels. Whatever you love, be sure to make that a must-have within your bathroom. After a long day, you deserve to soak in a deep bath and forget about those stresses, even if just for a short time.

Inviting Textiles & Plush Furniture

When designing welcoming spaces, it’s critical to remember that furniture and textiles make a big difference in how a room feels. To maximize comfort, always opt for plush seating that you’ll want to sink into whenever you get a chance and combine a mix of textiles that bring you both joy and make the room feel like an elegant escape. From velvets to tufted headboards, and deep sofas to layered throw pillows, a room truly becomes a getaway when you layer these prize elements together. If you strike the right balance, you’ll never want to leave.

Stunning Views

Views are everything in a home, and if you have the ability to incorporate them into your design, it’ll instantly open up your space and leave you feeling connected to the nature around you. Floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto treetop views enrich your happiness as you watch the leaves change from season to season, while views that open up onto a lakefront can give you a feeling of peace each and every day as you watch the waves lap at the shoreline. Your house should ultimately feel connected to, versus cordoned off from, the world.

By prioritizing each space, you’re sure to feel calm and collected, no matter which room you’re in. So, we say go ahead and embrace that elegance and luxury in every way you can. Once that design is finished, there’ll truly be no place like home.
